WHAT IS A

DEATH DOULA?

A death doula offers compassionate, non-medical support for people facing serious illness and for the loved ones who care for them. From the first diagnosis through the final moments — and often into the time of mourning — a death doula walks alongside families, helping them feel less alone and more prepared for what comes next.

Whether at home, in a hospital, or in a care facility, death doulas bring steadiness, comfort, and an open heart. They tend to the whole person — honoring emotional, spiritual, physical, and practical needs — and help families find peace and meaning in the midst of change.

Because death doulas aren’t medical professionals, their work isn’t about treatment or advice. It’s about listening without judgment, creating space for what matters most, and ensuring that each person’s choices and values are truly seen and respected.

Many families connect with a death doula long before hospice care begins. Doulas can help ease difficult transitions, explain available options, connect families to community resources, and support them in planning ahead, whether through legacy projects, ceremonies, or simple moments of reflection.

A death doula’s presence brings reassurance. They sit quietly when words aren’t needed, offer guidance when asked, and help transform what often feels overwhelming into something more manageable and deeply human. In their care, dying becomes not just an ending, but part of the shared story of living well until the last breath.

About

ABOUT

LISETTE KEIL

I have experienced the deaths of many loved ones. These experiences drew me to this profession, to stand with others during life’s most vulnerable transition. I have long been someone people feel comfortable confiding in about illness and mortality, a quality that has shaped my practice. In serving families, I offer patient listening, a steady presence, and compassionate guidance as they navigate times that can feel overwhelming and disorienting. My personal journey deepens my empathy and informs my ability to relate to what clients are experiencing. I am called to this work — to ease the process of dying for others — and I recognize the profound need for thoughtful, compassionate end-of-life support in our society.
